June 2, 1972: A group of five Marredpally residents—Sudhir Ponnala, Vijay Mohan, Mehmood Saberi, and VK Veera Raghavan, led by Srivatsa Iyengar—met for the first K-Circle session in YMCA, Secunderabad. From small beginnings, KC stayed together, attracted more likeminded individuals, survived a few existential crises and has kept growing.
KC completed 50 years in 2022, when the world was in lockdown. Therefore, at the earliest possible opportunity, in 2023, we celebrated our Golden Jubilee by videographing the annual open quiz fest and sharing it on YouTube, where the quizzes can be enjoyed for all posterity.
KC's sister organisation, YOCS, was started before KC, in 1969, during a Telangana statehood agitation. YOCs expands to "Young Orators' Club", but what is the "K" in K-Circle?
Ending years of speculation and myth-making, founder Srivatsa has reliably informed us that the "K" stands for "Knowledge", which has been the mission of the club always.
K-Circle is India's oldest (registered and continuously operating) quiz club. It is based in Hyderabad and one of its USPs is that there's a quiz every week - this is not trivial to achieve (pardon the pun!), and most other quiz clubs do not quiz every week. We do lively, engaging and informally informative quiz sessions that everybody is welcome to attend.
K-Circle, a motley group if ever there was one, is open to members of all ages. An informal club from day 1, we don’t even have a form for new entrants to fill. No registration required, no frills, no badges, no pins/medals, no passwords. . . if you come in late, you just may have to perch on the window sill, but that's about it!
We, at the club are equally adept at conducting and winning quizzes. K-Circle quizzes have the well-deserved reputation of being thoroughly researched, highly interesting and innovative, deliberately distinct from the trivia-recall type of GK quiz.
KC is the melting-pot of a huge array of interests - Rock could mean an inspired piece by Led Zeppelin to one and a lump of sandstone to another . . . One guy knows Icarus better than he knows his neighbour; to the others he’s just another book on their agenda...
WWW stands for Whoa! Wild West! just as much as World Wide Web . . . Echo has the physics don explaining waves while the etymology buff thinks of the cursed maiden.
For all their differences, we’re ever ready to applaud anything quiz worthy.
Do swing by for one of our weekly sessions, for you will certainly be hooked! Information regarding upcoming sessions are updated on the website, as well as our Facebook, Instagram, & X (formerly Twitter).
